Job Requirements/Description

Job Opportunity: Unix Technical Manager

My client is seeking a skilled professional with a proven track record of successfully owning and delivering complex infrastructure projects under tight deadlines. The organization’s extensive investments in data centers and physical infrastructure across various regions present unique challenges. You will need to understand how these infrastructure projects intersect with business and software delivery teams, while also building awareness and capabilities in these areas. Strong relationship-building across service lines and with internal partners in other departments and central CTO teams is essential.

In this role, you will participate in vendor interviews and, post-contract, drive the execution of those agreements. While this role is not purely technical, it involves driving and influencing engineering and infrastructure work across the service line. A solid understanding of technical issues and effective communication with engineering teams is a must.

This is not a task-based role; you will be responsible for ensuring successful outcomes and delivery.

The Unix Technical Manager position reports to the Head of Infrastructure Engineering.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the Distributed Compute team and manage all operations related to IT infrastructure and service delivery within the service line’s scope.
  • Act as the Technical SME for Linux Systems, with solid infrastructure support experience in configuring, optimizing, and maintaining infrastructure components in a Linux-based environment.
  • Make critical decisions on technology adoption to meet future business needs, prioritize projects, assemble project teams, allocate resources, select vendors, and recommend future state solutions.
  • Collaborate with IT Service Management leadership, IT service owners, the Head of Infrastructure, process owners, and various service delivery groups to develop technical solutions that meet the business needs of the Technology organization.
  • Oversee project progress, manage resources, and ensure the overall quality of completed infrastructure delivery.
  • Manage user demand on infrastructure and supervise delivery.
  • Provide strong technical leadership, create, and manage infrastructure plans and standards in line with the IT strategic plan and roadmap.
  • Manage change initiatives systematically to ensure the availability, performance, and reliability of systems affected by change.
  • Organize, supervise, and develop teams for BAU support and Infrastructure tasks.
  • Communicate progress and delays efficiently and accurately to the Head of Infrastructure.
  • Optimize resources, reduce TCO, centralize services, and explore cloud opportunities.
  • Serve as a liaison between team members and functional area management requesting work.
  • Develop infrastructure plans and capacity strategies to meet business growth needs.
  • Effectively manage infrastructure projects and resources.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Knowledge & Skills Required:

  • 15+ years of team management and Linux system administration experience within a large infrastructure and organization.
  • Solid experience leading experienced engineers in delivering complex deployment projects and supporting infrastructure in diversified or matrix structures.
  • Extensive experience in large-scale enterprise infrastructure system deployment and integration.
  • Strong experience with Red Hat Linux 6/7/8 administration and VMware virtualization products.
  • Familiarity with VCS setup, configuration, and other cluster solutions.
  • Practical knowledge of SAN/NAS storage and backup solutions (e.g., NetBackup).
  • Proficiency in shell scripting and automation tools such as Ansible, GIT, and Jenkins pipelines.
  • Expertise in IT infrastructure architecture and capability planning.
  • Familiarity with server patching, certificate renewals, and database/middleware products (WAS, IHS, Java, MQ).
  • Experience with cloud services (IKP, external cloud providers).
  • Understanding of the relationship between application design, data, and infrastructure environments.
  • Knowledge of business continuity and disaster recovery.
  • Experience with DevOps/Agile project execution.
  • Strong people management, performance management, and vendor management skills.

Leadership & Teamwork:

  • Open-minded leader and effective team player.
  • Strong client service orientation, capable of handling difficult situations and developing others.
  • Demonstrates leadership, teamwork, and cooperation.
  • Achievement-oriented, creative, disciplined, analytical, and adept at problem-solving and negotiation.
