Could you spearhead and expand our UK Strategic Environmental Assessment services? If you have a background in strategic environmental planning and can be based out of any of our UK offices (London, Bath, Manchester, Leeds or Edinburgh) a couple of days a week, this role could be perfect for you.

The role will take on the day to day responsibility for growing our strategic environmental assessment/sustainability appraisal/integrated assessment offering in the UK, working alongside our SEA lead.

Our SEA and strategic environmental planning service line sits within the Environmental Consulting Discipline, at the heart of Buro Happold's environmental consultancy. This role will take forward the day to day responsibility for growing and leading our UK strategic environmental planning offer.

If you join, you would be one of the senior leaders within the Environmental Consulting business, and as such you will have a network of support around you, including from the Discipline Director and other service line leaders – who work collaboratively regarding work winning, operations and project delivery.

Buro Happold are looking to expand our strategic environmental planning services in the UK, on the back of a strong track record of International SEA to EU standards. Recent recruitment into the wider UK business, has included a focus on strategic transport, economics and health impacts assessment capability. On the back of this, there is an opportunity to work with a number of wider disciplines to expand and grow our strategic environmental planning portfolio of work, including in regard to local plans, air quality management areas and transport plans for local authorities in the UK.

We Are Looking For:

We would expect that you can demonstrate:

  • A track record of leading Strategic Environmental Assessment/Sustainability Appraisal/Integrated Assessment of plans and policies in the UK
  • Development of strategic environmental planning services in regard to technical quality/capacity, service offers and business development (including managing key relationships and tracking opportunities around local authority, transport authority etc, led workstreams);
  • Technical leadership for Strategic Environmental Assessment/Sustainability Appraisal/Integrated Assessment, including sign off of work;
  • A track record of leading and delivering multiple solutions to strategic environmental planning challenges, being able to articulate the benefits and shortfalls of each to the client, taking into consideration other disciplines requirements within these solutions.
  • Thorough knowledge of UK legislation and guidance relating to Strategic Environmental Assessment/Sustainability Appraisal/Integrated Assessment;
  • Experience in coaching and mentoring junior staff to develop their own technical skills;
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written;
  • The ability to take the lead in challenging situations in a confident and proactive manner;
  • Excellent knowledge of project and business financial and management systems; and
  • Membership of an appropriate professional body (e.g. IEMA, RTPI, IES is desirable).
