Job Requirements/Description

To Project Lead all aspects of work on plant and equipment to a safe and defined standard, also ensuring a commercial focus is given during planning and delivery. To support and provide assistance to the Team Leader and Substation Supervisory Engineer in ensuring the effective day-to-day utilisation of resources and prioritisation of work across all tasks and projects allocated.

What you'll be doing

  • Carry out roles as defined in National Grid’s processes and procedures including, ‘Person in Charge’, and ‘Project Leader’ within their sphere of competency, i.e. holding appropriate safety documents as required.
  • Undertake duties on a wide range of plant and equipment, including fault investigation and repair and routine inspections.
  • Enact the Project Leader (PL) role to enable successful delivery of work packages, ensuring a commercial focus is given to delivery in line with standard job times and OMGS budgets
  • Ensure that staff are set to work in accordance with National Grid policy and procedures, produce risk assessments and method statements for all work activities, and ensure tool box talks take place.
  • Provide support and assistance to the Team Leader/Substation Supervisory Engineer and other team members, including reviewing delivery performance.
  • Project Lead self-delivery activities, acting as appointed Principal Contractor Representative (PC) and Temporary Works Coordinator (TWC) under National Grid’s procedures and processes
  • Ensure productivity, efficiency and utilisation of various work groups by taking responsibility for direct control of staff and budget.
  • Be proactive in all aspects of the work programme communicating with line management, as appropriate, to enable the work programme to stay on track

What you'll need 

  • In depth technical knowledge relating to the electrical, mechanical and General safety aspects of substation plant, together with fault finding expertise and plant analysis.
  • A sound knowledge of general safety and ability to produce Risk Assessments and Method Statements to a high standard
  • Experience of working unsupervised on a wide range of transmission equipment as part of a fully integrated team but with occasional lone working

  • Minimum ONC (GNVQ level 3) in an Electrical or Mechanical Engineering discipline or the relevant experience in a previous role
  • Modern apprenticeship or equivalent, including City & Guilds 232 or relevant NVQ’s, in an Electrical or Mechanical Engineering discipline
  • Full UK driving license.
