Research Engineer

This role will be responsible for contributing to Rovco/Vaarst's research activities in perception, computer vision and SLAM (Simultaneous Localization and Mapping), developing new capabilities that enable marine robotic systems to solve real-world problems such as autonomous inspection of offshore wind farms.

The position requires experience working in at least one of the following areas: computer vision, SLAM, machine learning, sensor fusion. Familiarity with machine vision hardware, 3D reconstruction, or marine-specific sensors (e.g. DVL, SONAR) is highly beneficial. Experience in an industrial research environment is expected and the role holder should be used to working on problems without fully defined requirements. The role also emphasizes the ability to translate academic research into practical industrial applications and assess their effectiveness quantitatively.

Objectives & Responsibilities:

Rovco/Vaarst is an exciting and dynamic environment meaning these are likely to change as we grow. Upon joining your objectives and responsibilities will include:

Contributing to the proposal, evaluation, selection, and delivery of research projects. You will be expected to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams where projects require this, e.g. with experts in robotics, data processing or offshore survey. You may take technical lead of projects with adequately defined requirements.

As a mid-level member of the research team, proficiency in C++ programming is expected, this will help facilitate integration and deployment of research outcomes into operational systems. Work is facilitated with development tools such as git and docker under Linux. The role-holder will be involved with software testing with regression and/or unit tests to ensure software quality.

  • Experience in research activities in robotics, computer vision or sensor processing.
  • Developing software using modern C++.
  • Familiarity with Python or another scripting language.
  • Experience solving problems in a robotics context, e.g.
  • Sensor Fusion.
  • Uncertainty Modelling.
  • 3D Data Processing.
  • Experience participating in field trials.
  • Understanding of software engineering principles and best practices.

  • Working with ROS and Linux.
  • Working in the maritime domain.
  • Experience in SONAR data processing.
  • Knowledge of mapping and navigation techniques such as SLAM.
  • Experience with invention disclosure for patent protection.
  • Machine learning, particularly when applied to non-standard image data.
  • Using OpenCV library, PCL, Eigen, Numpy and Docker.
