NPD Lead / Senior Metallurgist

Here at Luxfer MEL, we have an exciting opportunity for an NPD Lead / Senior Metallurgist to join our Magnesium R&D team to support new product development. This is a technical-based role, but you’ll also collaborate with sales, production, and our customers.

Our Magnesium alloys are machined or extruded to custom shapes and specifications to meet customer requirements, and are used in high performance, safety critical aerospace, defence, healthcare, oil and gas, and motorsport applications.

We are a forward-thinking business with approximately 300 employees across the UK and US, and you’ll be joining our head office based in Swinton, Greater Manchester. Based within the R&D department, you will work as part of a team of Scientists and Engineers working on key development projects, with a mixture of team-based projects and independent work.

The Role – NPD Lead / Senior Metallurgist

Reporting to the Head of Magnesium R&D, you will undertake a varied role, engaging in developing ideas / concepts for new products, and expanding these concepts to prototype stage. Your further duties will include:

• Developing magnesium alloys / products to meet customer needs
• Managing projects to achieve targets and deadlines
• Acting as an expert in characterisation of material structure, and the relationship between processing parameters, material structure and material properties
• Supporting the Sales team with customer enquiries and regular updates
• Liaising with customers to appreciate their needs from our products

The Package

• A salary in the region of £35,000 to £40,000 with the level dependent on qualifications and experience

Our Requirements – NPD Lead / Senior Metallurgist

• Degree level qualification in a Science-related discipline, with an MSc focused on light alloys or similar (PhD preferable)
• Either have solid relevant experience gained in an industrial environment or post-graduate academic position
• High level of creativity, curiosity, and ability to generate new product ideas
• Superb problem solving, organisational and interpersonal skills, as well as the ability to work well as part of a team and lead others
• Confident, professional, and flexible approach with a ‘can do’ attitude

The following would be advantageous, although not essential:

• Experience with project management, particularly new product development projects through a stage and gate process
• Experience gained managing a small team
• Knowledge of metal processing technology, metallurgy of magnesium
