In addition, Calder are also the UK’s leading specialist in lead engineering. We design, manufacture, and install radiation shielding and other products for the nuclear, defence, healthcare, construction, industrial and research markets.

The Role - Quality Engineer

Reporting to the Quality and Technical Manager, as the Quality Engineer, you will be responsible for ensuring that production processes meet our highest standard in terms of quality. Your responsibilities will be, although not limited to:

  • Assisting with timely resolution of customer, supplier, and internal non-conformances in order to ensure that solutions are appropriate, and issues are resolved to our satisfaction
  • Ensuring that products and processes comply with the relevant requirements of the Quality Management System
  • Analysing non-conformance data for improvement opportunities through inspection and/or production processes. Establishing action plans and engaging relevant departments to implement
  • Assisting the Quality Manager in checking supplier conformance capabilities, evaluating new suppliers and the maintenance of existing suppliers
  • Working with other departments to ensure transfer to production on new products
  • Supporting the development of lean philosophy throughout the plant
  • Using 8D or similar analysis techniques to determine root cause and corrective actions
  • Conducting both internal and external audits of quality system
  • Maintaining the company calibration system
  • Preparing quality inspection and test plans / procedures
  • Raising and checking certificates of analysis and conformity
  • Visiting site installations when required, to assess progress and sign off
  • Assisting in the maintenance and update of quality documentation
  • Liaising with customers on a 1 to 1 basis regarding quality matters

The Package

As the Quality Engineer, working from our Sealand Road premises on the outskirts of Chester City Centre, you’ll benefit from:

  • A starting salary in the region of £35,000 to £42,000, with the level dependent on experience
  • Permanent contract, working 35 hours per week, Monday to Thursday, 8:30am to 5pm, and Friday 8:30am to 12:30pm

Our Requirements – Quality Engineer

  • HNC / HND or equivalent in an engineering discipline, along with a Lean qualification
  • Proven experience of working within a lean, engineering focused environment, with knowledge of relevant manufacturing processes such as casting, fabrication, machining etc.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings
  • Proven ability of project / root cause problem solving skills
  • Knowledge of ISO9001 Quality Management System
  • Ability to use relevant tools to analyse and improve production processes (e.g. process flow, poke yoke, SMED, VAVE, FMEA)
  • IT literate with good working knowledge of Microsoft Office and Project
  • Excellent communication skills with ability to build good working relationships with stakeholders
  • Confident team player with ability to work on own initiative
  • High level of attention to detail
  • Self motivated and flexible towards managing priorities and own workload
