Pilot Plant Technician

Luxfer MEL Technologies is a global leader in the development, manufacture and supply of magnesium and zirconium based products and services to industries worldwide. Our high-value solutions help to improve people’s lives, keep them safer, and make their work more productive.

Zirconium chemicals are produced at our Swinton site from a range of raw materials and our lightweight magnesium alloys are machined or extruded to custom shapes and specifications to meet customer requirements. Our products are used in a variety of sectors including high performance, safety critical aerospace, defence, healthcare, oil and gas and Formula 1.

We are a forward-thinking business with approximately 300 employees across the UK and US, and you’ll be joining our head office based in Swinton, Greater Manchester.

The Role – Pilot Plant Technician

Reporting to the Technical Lead of the New Product Introduction department, as a Pilot Plant Technician your focus will be on supporting the development of new products and processes; helping prepare samples in our pilot plans, and arranging the shipment to customers.

You will be part of the wider dynamic R&D team that aims to facilitate continuous growth of our technology and product portfolio as well as providing outstanding customer support and services.

Other specific duties will include:

  • Assisting with producing routine batches on the pilot plants including downstream processing, which could involve the use of tanks, pumps, filtration equipment, ovens, kilns and mills at scales from 5kg to 200kg
  • Maintaining laboratory and pilot plant stocks of standard raw materials, and other general consumables, including gathering stocks from main plant bulk tanks
  • Carrying out in-process analysis such as pH, trace impurity levels, particle size, LOD, LOI
  • Supporting with carrying out routine calibrations for testing equipment
  • Contributing to safe and managed storage of in process and finished development samples
  • Supporting the scale-up of new products and processes to full scale production
  • Ensuring laboratory 5S standards are maintained

Our Requirements – Pilot Plant Technician

  • Some experience working within a relevant industrial setting
  • GCSE’s including Science, English, Maths and IT at Grade C or above or equivalent level of competency
  • Ability to perform mathematical calculations
  • Ability to follow clear written instructions and legibly record accurate results
  • High level of attention to detail
  • Ability to prioritise own tasks with good time management
  • Team player who demonstrates a high level of commitment, adopting a flexible and positive approach
  • Good knowledge of Microsoft Office

Although not essential, experience of working with chemicals, and a forklift truck licence, would be desirable.

You’ll be employed on a permanent contract, working 37 hours per week with varying day shifts on alternate weeks, either; 6am to 2pm Monday to Friday; or 2pm to 10pm Monday to Thursday and 10am to 5.30pm Friday.
